Feature/Application: Gen6 Recovery Procedure

If you are unable to connect to the SonicWALL security appliance’s management interface, you can restart the SonicWALL security appliance in SafeMode. The SafeMode feature also allows you to quickly recover from uncertain configuration states with a simplified management interface that includes the same settings available on the System > Settings page.

Important Note: It is highly recommended to backup your SonicWALL Settings before proceeding with the following steps

Procedure:

To reset the SonicWALL security appliance, perform the following steps:

Note: By default the X0 interface would be in disabled state when the appliance is in SafeMode. Therefore, the MGMT port must be used to access the management UI.

Step 1. Connect your computer to the MGMT port on the appliance and configure your computer with an IP address on the 192.168.1.0/24 subnet, such as 192.168.1.20.
Step 2. Use a narrow, straight object, like a straightened paper clip or a toothpick, to press and hold the reset button on the security appliance for more than 20 seconds.

The Test light starts blinking when the Dell SonicWALL security appliance has rebooted into SafeMode.

Step 3. Point the browser on your computer to 192.168.1.254. The SafeMode management interface displays.

Step 4. Click Upload New Firmware, and then browse to the location where you saved the SonicOS firmwareimage, select the file, and click Upload.

Step 5. Click the boot icon in the row for one of the following: ◦Uploaded Firmware – New!

Use this option to restart the appliance with your current configuration settings.

◦Uploaded Firmware with Factory Default Settings–New!
Use this option to restart the appliance with default configuration settings.

Step 6. In the confirmation dialog box, click OK to proceed.

Step 7 Disconnect your computer from the MGMT port, and reconfigure it to automatically obtain an IP address and DNS server address, or reset it to its normal static values.

Step 8. Connect the computer to your network or to the X0 (LAN) interface of the appliance, and point your browser to the WAN or LAN IP address of the
Dell SonicWALL appliance.

Step 9 After successfully booting the firmware, the login screen is displayed. If you booted with factory default settings, enter the default user name and password (admin /
password) to access the SonicOS management interface. The default IP address of the X0 interface is 192.168.168.168.

Tip: If this procedure does not work while the power is on, turn the unit OFF and ON while holding the reset button until the Test light starts blinking (around 20sec).

Step 10. If you have made any configuration changes to the security appliance, make a backup copy of your current settings. Click Create Backup Settings.

Step 11. Try rebooting the SonicWALL security appliance with your current settings. Click the boot icon in the same line with Current Firmware (settings will not be
erased).

Step 12. After the SonicWALL security appliance has rebooted, try to open the management interface again. If you still cannot open the management interface, use the
reset button to restart the appliance in SafeMode again. In SafeMode, restart the SonicOS image with the factory default settings. Click the boot icon in the
same line with the Current Firmware with Factory Default Settings.

Step 13. After the SonicWALL security appliance has rebooted, try to open the management interface again. If you are able to connect, you can recreate your
configuration or try to reboot the backup settings: Restart the security appliance in SafeMode again, and click the boot icon in the same line with Current
Firmware with Backup Settings.
